What is Drupal?

Drupal is a community supported framework for creating, organising, presenting and managing websites. It powers millions of websites and applications from all over the world.

Drupal is free, open source software that is maintained and developed by a community of hundreds of thousands of users and developers. First released in 2001, it has become a content management framework that is used to create and manage many websites around the world ranging from personal blogs to corporate and government websites, e-commerce sites and web applications.

The core Drupal software is complemented by many thousands of free modules that are contributed by the Drupal community, and which can be "plugged into" a Drupal website to give it extra functionality. This modular approach means that your website will only be as big as it needs to be so that performance is not affected. Drupal can be used "out of the box" without needing any programming skills, but it also offers a sophisticated programming interface which can be used to extend its functionality even further.

Drupal can use most standard databases for storing its configuration and all of the website content.

What is Drupal Used for?

Drupal is an excellent choice for building any website due to the ease with which you can build websites, and the ease with which you can maintain websites once they have been built. It provides a robust and secure platform that can quickly and easily be enhanced through the use of any of the many thousands of contributed modules. User and security management, content maintenance facilities, and site configuration (along with many other administrative functions) come included with the Drupal system.
